Data Rate (Bit Rate)

  • Definition: The data rate, or bit rate, is the number of bits transmitted per second.
  • Units: Measured in bits per second (bps), kilobits per second (kbps), megabits per second (Mbps), etc.
  • Significance: Indicates the amount of data being transmitted over a communication channel per unit of time.
  • Example: If a network has a data rate of 1 Mbps, it means 1 million bits are transmitted every second.

Baud Rate

  • Definition: The baud rate is the number of signal changes (or symbols) transmitted per second.
  • Units: Measured in bauds or symbols per second.
  • Significance: Represents the rate at which the signal changes. Each symbol can represent one or more bits, depending on the modulation scheme.
  • Example: If a modem has a baud rate of 2400 baud and uses a modulation scheme where each symbol represents 2 bits, the data rate would be 4800 bps.
