• 1906 – A massive earthquake hit San Francisco, California, followed by fires, killing nearly 3,000 people and destroying much of the city.
  
  

• 1942 – During World War II, the Doolittle Raid was launched: the U.S. bombed Tokyo in a symbolic counterattack on Japan.
  
  

• 1955 – Albert Einstein, the German-born physicist and Nobel laureate known for the Theory of Relativity, passed away at the age of 76.
  
  

• 1983 – A suicide bombing at the U.S. Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, killed 63 people, including American personnel.

• 1906 – सैन फ्रांसिस्को (कैलिफोर्निया) में भीषण भूकंप आया, जिससे आग लग गई और लगभग 3,000 लोगों की मौत हो गई तथा शहर का बड़ा हिस्सा नष्ट हो गया।
